Woox 701198 Zigbee user guide
It’s a popular Zigbee sprinkler controller on the smart home market and we’re going to find out all about it today.
In the various contents, we can see the smart devices that a user is installing in their home.
But he also wanted to control his garden with a range of automatic devices, so he decided to opt for a Zigbee irrigation controller from Woox.
Presentation of the Woox 701198 Zigbee irrigation controller
First of all, this irrigation timer communicates with the famous Zigbee technology, so you need a compatible Zigbee hub.
In this case, it uses the Jeedom Luna home automation hub and Zigbee2MQTT.
But of course you can also use Home Assistant with Zigbee2MQTT.
You can also use a Tuya home automation hub from Lidl, Moes, Woox or any other Tuya brand.
Another advantage: if you have an Amazon Alexa voice assistant with an integrated Zigbee hub, you can also connect this Woox irrigation timer.
And control your watering by voice.
The direct range should be 10 to 15 metres between this controller and your Zigbee hub, but as you know, a very interesting feature of Zigbee wireless technology is the repetition of the signal from devices connected to the power supply, such as sockets, modules and light bulbs.
So, if your Zigbee hub is far away from this irrigation controller, you can always add a Zigbee device halfway and have the signal automatically repeat itself so that this irrigation controller can work properly.
And as the smart home user already has various Zigbee devices, that’s why he prefers to use a Zigbee irrigation timer in order to have sufficient range.
What’s more, unlike a WIFI irrigation timer, which generally needs the internet to work, with this Zigbee irrigation timer, your automated systems will work even if there are internet outages because Jeedom, like Home Assistant, works locally.
This Woox irrigation controller measures 19 cm x 10 cm x 7.7 cm.
And that’s a factor to take into account given that in some contexts, as in the case of another smart home user, he doesn’t have enough space and has therefore decided to adopt another Zigbee irrigation controller from the Saswell brand.
It’s made from dark green and black ABS plastic, is rainproof and UV-resistant, and has an IP44 rating for outdoor use.
Its operating temperature is between 0 and 45°C. It is therefore advisable to remove it in winter to avoid damaging it.
If we open the irrigation controller, inside we can see that it is powered by AA batteries, which are included.
How to install the Woox automatic watering system
At the top, the controller incorporates a 3/4″ adaptor which can be screwed onto a 3/4″ tap.
The nozzle incorporates a strainer to prevent the passage of debris that could block the drip.
When you connect it to the tap, you need to tighten the adaptor properly and you can check that there is no water leakage.
If necessary, you can add a strip of Teflon or a seal to prevent water leaks.
At the bottom we have a ½” and ¾” adaptor outlet.
If we open the cover, we can see two buttons, a green one to activate manual watering and a red one to deactivate it.
This is a very interesting detail that I often recommend: when you buy smart appliances, it’s very practical to always have manual control so that you don’t have to depend on your home automation hub and have a phone in your hands. Traditional manual control allows you to have that flexibility when you want to water or not.
In addition to the start and stop buttons, we also have an LED indicator that lights up when a command is sent to our irrigation controller and when it is in association mode.
How to set up an automatic garden irrigation system with Woox
Speaking of association, we’re going to link it to a home automation hub. To do this, whatever your hub, you need to set it to association mode.
Woox R7060 linked to Home Assistant or Jeedom with Zigbee2MQTT
You must activate the inclusion mode in Zigbee2MQTT.
At this point, you can press the red button on the irrigation controller for more than 5 seconds and the LED will flash blue.
After a few seconds, you’ll see your irrigation timer on the interface of your home automation hub. You can now control it remotely from your computer or phone.
The user uses Zigbee2mqtt, which is compatible with Jeedom and Home Assistant. So it’s now possible to remotely activate the Zigbee watering system in your garden.
And deactivate this Zigbee watering.
Partnership between Woox R7060 and a Tuya hub
As I mentioned, you can also use it with a Tuya hub with the Smart Life application.
The process is similar, once you have put your hub in association mode and pressed the red button on the Woox Zigbee irrigation controller for 5 seconds, after a few seconds it will appear on your interface.
And now you can programme an automatic watering period.
You can also programme watering times throughout the week.
Pairing the Woox R7060 with the Amazon Alexa voice assistant and the Zigbee hub
This Woox R7060 controller is also directly compatible with an Amazon Alexa voice assistant with integrated Zigbee technology.
You need to add a device and click on “Other”.
You must choose “Zigbee” (note that you must have an Amazon Alexa voice assistant with an integrated Zigbee hub. If you don’t, you can use a Tuya, Home Assistant or Jeedom hub and connect it to Amazon Alexa for voice control of your irrigation).
At this point, you need to put your irrigation controller into association mode by pressing the red button for 5 seconds.
Your irrigation timer is now detected by Alexa and you can personalise its name to control it by voice.
Now you can control your irrigation by voice.
- “Alexa, activate intelligent watering”.
- “Alexa, disable smart watering”.
This irrigation timer works with a water pressure of between 2 and 7 bars.
It doesn’t measure consumption, unlike other Zigbee irrigation controllers, but it does have the advantage of being less expensive, which is an attractive feature for many users.
Now that we have remote control of this irrigation, users can connect their drip irrigation hose to the Woox controller and water according to their needs.
You can adjust the drip in each area of your garden.
In addition, this user has installed Zigbee soil temperature and humidity sensors to find out when the soil is dry or damp.
And a Netatmo intelligent rain gauge to find out how much rain has fallen in real time.
All these devices will make it possible to water or not, depending on soil moisture and rainfall levels, using automatic controls that the user creates with his or her home automation hub.
You can create different timetables and take into account measurements from sensors and rain gauges.
In short, this Zigbee irrigation controller is simple but effective, attractively priced and very popular on the smart home market for its ability to optimise irrigation in your garden.
