Disadvantages
- Zigbee hub required: If you want to benefit from routines based on measured temperature and humidity, you need to use a compatible Zigbee hub.
Why is the SNZB-02D a success?
The Sonoff temperature and humidity sensor is the best-selling product in the Domadoo home automation online shop where I work.
Users often purchase several of these sensors and install them in different areas of the home to automatically regulate heating, air conditioning or ventilation, using additional smart devices such as smart modules or thermostatic heads.
1: Use of Zigbee technology
The first key is that Sonoff is once again presenting a smart device with Zigbee wireless technology, which I’ve talked about in other content and which, in my opinion, is currently the most interesting technology for integrating devices from different brands in a smart home.
This Sonoff SNZB-02D temperature and humidity sensor communicates using Zigbee technology and can be connected to a Sonoff home automation hub.
Or any other compatible brand, such as Homey, eedomus or Tuya Smart Life.
And of course, it’s also compatible with Home Assistant and Jeedom with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT.
For example, if you are using Zigbee2MQTT, you need to activate the inclusion mode (top right).
You have around 4 minutes to connect your sensor.
To do this, press the sensor button for a few seconds.
A wave signal should flash, which means that the sensor is in inclusion mode.
After a few seconds, the sensor appears on the Zigbee2MQTT interface (or any other compatible hub you use).
With Zigbee2Mqtt, which you can use with Jeedom and Home Assistant, you can see the sensor’s temperature and humidity readings in real time, as well as the battery level and link quality.
You will have access to various parameters, such as the frequency with which temperature and humidity data is sent, and how these values are calibrated if necessary.
However, Sonoff says that its sensors are made in Switzerland, which should be a good indicator of quality.
As well as providing real-time measurements, you can also access a history over time.
You can also use it with a voice assistant such as Amazon Alexa, which incorporates Zigbee technology, like the fourth-generation Echo, but you will only be able to access temperature measurements.
No.2: Essential functions for a smart home
The second key to the success of this new device is that it incorporates functions that are essential in a smart home, such as temperature and humidity measurement.
These measurements enable users to monitor the temperature and humidity in different areas of their home and programme automatic adjustment of heating, air conditioning or ventilation.
If we consider that these automatic adjustments not only increase comfort but can also generate energy savings, this type of sensor becomes even more interesting.
No. 3: Temperature and humidity sensor with display
The third key to success is that this SNZB-02D sensor, unlike most intelligent temperature and humidity sensors, incorporates a screen that allows you to see the temperature of an area of your home without the need to use a computer or telephone.
Home automation must not only be able to be controlled from a computer or phone, but also offer the possibility of accessing information directly on the sensor. With this device, you can easily find out the temperature and humidity in an area of your home. What’s more, the LCD screen is large enough to display this information clearly, as well as the battery level and Zigbee connection icon.
No. 4: Device quality details
The fourth key to success is Sonoff’s attention to detail. This sensor can be installed on a metal surface, such as a fridge door.
What’s more, it comes with a bracket so you can mount it on any piece of furniture.
It also includes an additional bracket that you can stick to the wall using a 3M sticker, and you can move the sensor from this bracket at any time. It’s powered by an included CR2450 battery.
It is important to note that it can operate in a temperature range from -10°C to +60°C and in a humidity range from 5% to 95%, with a measurement update rate of every 5 seconds. It can therefore be used in a variety of environments, including outdoors, although it is not designed to be exposed to rain.
No. 5: Attractive price
The fifth key to the success of this sensor is, of course, its incredibly low price compared to what we usually see on the smart home market. With a price tag of less than 14 euros, users have no hesitation in buying several of these sensors to install in different parts of their home and monitor temperature and humidity throughout the house.
Ultimately, Sonoff always succeeds in offering smart devices that are essential for a smart home, offering very interesting features and competitive prices that attract users from all over the world.
